Horse back riding tours around Cotopaxi Volcano
Cotopaxi National Park day trip
We start riding toward our neighbor hacienda Limache where we can see broccoli fields and hundreds of roses. Following the road there is very little vegetation, lots of rocks and boulders that have rolled or been pushed down from the mountains. (4hrs). After coming through the gates to the National Park ($10US per person) we entered the valley that drains the glaciers and rivers that flow from Vulcan Cotapaxi and the other great mountains.
For those that wish, there is the chance for some more fast pace riding across the undulating grasslands at the foot of the volcano before we head out over the lunar-like landscapes and around a shallow lake on the high altitude arid plain. (6hrs). Here we do the highest gallop in the world.
The unique landscape is fascinating: carved out by the glaciers then filled in by volcanic eruptions. We often see the herds of wild horses that roam the parkland and enjoy a gallop alongside the curious stallions of the groups, their long manes and tails streaming out as they cross the rugged ground.
At the end of the ride (10hrs) we head back to Hato Verde, on the routes guests see a wide variety of birds including hummingbirds and many species of birds of prey. The magnificent Andean condor sometimes puts in an appearance as we ride high into the sierra.
Cara Sur Cotopaxi day trip
We leave Hato Verde to Mulaló town passing by a lot of nice nature to see; neighbor haciendas, rose plantations and broccoli fields; we will horseback ride up to about 3500 Mts. Above sea level to reach a nice plain where we all can see the south face COTOPAXI. From here, benefit from great views of surrounding mountains including Antisana, Chimborazo, and Illinizas while enjoying a great packed lunch.
On your way down, keep enjoying the Ecuadorian high plains until getting through the area of the big rock “chilintosa” that came out of the Cotopaxi volcano on its last eruption. Then we take our way back to Hacienda Hato Verde (about 8 hours RIDE).
If you prefer, we will also take you to visit San Agustin’s Inca ruins (Including lunch + USD 30, 00 per person).
Important Notes These rides take place above 3000 meters and we ride at above 4000 meters. We advise arriving early in Ecuador to acclimatize.
